Continuity is larger than the face

A familiar face cannot rescue a sequence where the jacket changes material, a doorway moves, or a damaged prop becomes new again. Continuity is the combined logic of identity, objects, space, time and story events.

The seven-point review

Pause at every cut and inspect the elements below before approving the next shot.

• Character identity and body proportions
• Hair, makeup, wardrobe and accessories
• Props, products and object condition
• Location geometry and background anchors
• Light direction, time of day and weather
• Screen direction, camera height and lens language
• Story state carried forward from earlier scenes

Compare in two directions

First compare the shot with the approved master reference. Then compare it with the shot immediately before it. The master catches identity drift; the adjacent comparison catches broken motion, spatial reversals and unrecorded story changes.

Label intentional changes

A continuity checker needs to know that rain started, a coat was removed or a glass was broken. Record intended changes at the moment they occur and carry the resulting state into every later shot.

Turn findings into repairs
